Skye Taylor lives a pretty quiet life. Since the death of her husband, Skye has pretty much kept to herself. Actually apart from being legally blind and still driving, her life seems pretty dull. That is, until a series of events shakes Skye’s world to its very core.
The first hints of something strange begin in the hospital after an accident. A mysterious man visits Skye and she sees something odd, a blue mist. At first, Skye assumes this is just a weird morphine induced delusion. However, afterwards Skye realizes that she has the ability to heal wounds.
Then, things get complicated, in more ways than one. Skye starts a new job as a massage therapist. Everyone is wonderful except the very attractive Khalen who is aloof and sometimes downright judgmental. What Skye doesn’t know is that Khalen knows far more about her, about the blue mist, and about her future than he’s letting on. In fact, Skye is about to be thrown into the middle of a war between the Spirians and the Shadows. Ultimately, how Skye reacts will determine if good triumphs over evil or not.
The Protected took me by surprise. The book started off innocently enough with a quirky but pretty average main character with subtle hints of something more. That drew me in. Then, the layers started to be peeled back and the story unfolded. Before I knew it, I was hooked.
If you are a trivia buff that likes learning little tidbits about classic movies or like me are constantly asking “Isn’t that the guy from such and such a movie?” then you’ll enjoy Science-Fiction & Fantasy Cinema: Classic Films of Horror, Sci-Fi & The Supernatural. This reference covers a wide variety of movies from the thirties to the seventies. These include epic movies like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Star Wars, Abbott & Costello comedy flicks, and even a large selection of Disney movies.
The movies are presented in alphabetical order. Each entry then notes the characters and the actors that played them as well as the people behind the scenes such as the director, producer, writer, etc. From here we get into the details of copyright date, release dates, and length of the film. A short synopsis and a comment section follow.
Apart from the section where I could look up names of actors, the comments section was probably the section I most enjoyed. I found myself browsing these sections and finding out all sorts of interesting bits of trivia.
In The Secrets of Successful Inventors, the author shares the lessons he has learned while trying to bring his product, Athlete’s Oasis, to market. It would seem that the inventor did everything right when it came to paperwork but still the product did not sell. It was at this point, that he realized the importance of promoting solutions not features. In this way, potential customers saw answers to specific problems, their problems. The answer was of course Athlete’s Oasis. From there, money started rolling in.
The Secrets of Successful Inventors takes the reader through the process. The author shows how doing things yourself can save a good deal of money. He also says that sometimes in following your dream you have to dig deeper to figure out how to be successful.
Often we forget that the freedoms we enjoy were made possible by people who were willing to courageously (and perhaps stubbornly) push the boundaries of convention. This is definitely the case for female pilots. So many women have fought sexism and stereotypes just to do what they loved to do.
Flying Above the Glass Ceiling looks at the history of females in aviation. The majority of these individuals fell in love with flying, then had to work extremely hard just to get certification. Then, the real work began as they tried to get jobs in a male dominated industry that wasn’t shy about saying that women weren’t welcome.
Perhaps the best portion of the book is the first hand stories of some of these courageous women. In these accounts, we see the struggles that these women faced and in some cases still face. We also learned how they balanced a very demanding career, marriage, and family.
Elizabeth Latimer is a pirate hunter. You could say pirating and pirate hunting are in her blood. Her Dad was a sailor. Her mother a pirate (well, she salvaged old shipwrecks for a living). What Liz didn’t know was that even further back she was actually related to the pirates Calico Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny.
This little known fact becomes all too important as Liz is faced with the disappearance of her mother. Coincidentally, Liz’s Mom was working on Rackham’s ship when she found the key to traveling back in time. Unfortunately, in the process, Liz’s Mom messed up the timeline. Now, Rackham and Bonny never get back together and never have children.
So Liz has to go back in time, fight pirates, get arrested, escape from the gallows, and match make two extremely stubborn pirates. Then, rescue her mother and get herself home before they all cease to exist. Sound easy?
The Pirate Vortex is the start of a great new adventure series. I don’t want to spoil the ending of the book but I will say that not all the loose ends are tied up and the end of this one. More adventures are definitely on the horizon. Furthermore, although touched upon throughout the book, we end up really wondering about the true identity of one of the main characters.
