I just finished this book and was sad to see it end. I hope there is another forthcoming. Paolo balances detail, violence, and drama very well. Each day I looked forward to picking this up. I encourage everyone to check out his unique vision.

I saw the movie first and loved it, so then I had to read the book. The text is lyrical and nice to read. While they did a good job adapting the movie from the book, it is still more than worthwhile reading the book as it really is different. Without giving away the differences, suffice it to say that you will come away understanding the dynamics of the Watches that much better. There is also a lot more content in the book beyond where the movie leaves off.
If you like dark fantasy and a window into not only a foreign culture, but a world of a different type of being, then you will love this. It's much like a version of the tale of the Seelie/Unseelie courts, moved to Russia.
I can't wait to read the next two books in the series. I hear there is a fourth, but it hasn't been released State-side.
