Where the Crooked River Rises: A High Desert Home by Ellen Waterston
Where the Crooked River Rises: A High Desert Home

A thoughtful reflection on life as an Oregon high desert rancher, Where the Crooked River Rises is a combination of history and memoir. It’s also interesting to read about the author’s transition from running a ranch to living in a housing development in Bend. My only disappointment was that the book wasn’t longer.

Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout by Philip Connors
Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout

Fantastic account of what it’s like to be a modern day fire lookout. Each year we stay in a different Forest Service lookout rental - this year I had a new perspective while reading Fire Season in the Gold Butte Lookout.

Fire Season make me want to ditch my office job for the summer and sign up with the Forest Service!

The Rajneesh Chronicles: The True Story of the Cult That Unleashed the First Act of Bioterrorism on U.S. Soil by Win Mccormack
The Rajneesh Chronicles: The True Story of the Cult That Unleashed the First Act of Bioterrorism on U.S. Soil

Excellent review of what went down in central Oregon in the 80's.

The writing style is easy to follow and hooks you in (much of the book contains reprints of stories that originally ran in Oregon Magazine).

Give this one a read if you are curious about this strange part of Oregon’s past.
