Class Matters: Cross-Class Alliance Building for Middle-Class Activists by Bets Leondar Wright
Class Matters: Cross-Class Alliance Building for Middle-Class Activists

tvantol, November 29, 2006

Class Matters: Cross-class alliance building for middle-class activists by Betsy Leondar-Wright is must-read for any middle or owning class person who is thinking about or actively taking part in community organizing or social work-type jobs in any capacity. Leondar-Wright does not write a lot of explanations of definitions or long descriptions of each class category, but instead uses the voices of many people working in the field to help explain key differences between classes. There is substantial information written as to how unintentionally detrimental middle class people and ideas can be when working to ?help? poor and working class communities. Just as we cannot practice a philosophy of ?color blindness? we cannot ignore differences in class cultures. This book takes a seemingly hard approach and may be difficult for some middle-class people to digest especially if they have never been exposed to the idea in this book in any way. It does not mince words and there are no pats on the back for trying to go out to help make change. It really points out the inadequacies middle-class organizers have when they do not listen, reflect, and learn from the people they are working amongst.
