The Cold Commands
The Cold Commands

victorix, January 20, 2012

The sequel to Richard Morgan's incredible fantasy epic "The Steel Remains," "The Cold Commands" not only doesn't disappoint, it exceeds expectations. The trio of main characters from the first book is back, but they've grown and changed. In fact, this is probably one of the best parts of this series -- the characters act like real people, and react to the traumas they've endured in realistic ways. Gil in particular is dealing with the effects of too much time spent in the soft places, and it shows.

Unlike the first book, this one clearly leads toward a sequel, but enough is resolved that you won't feel cheated. Oh, and the best part? Gay and lesbian main characters, in a fantasy novel, where their sexuality isn't a big deal. They just happen to like people of the same sex, and the heterosexual main character just happens to like people of the opposite sex. It's a complex and beautifully integrated world that will make you wonder why more books aren't like this. Easily the best book of 2011!
