Einstein's Dreams: A Novel by Alan Lightman
Einstein's Dreams: A Novel

walkaways, January 7, 2013

This novel is in fact a treatise on the many guises of time. Time, herein, is delineated in its multi-faceted physical, if ephemeral, but concrete nature as revealed since Einstein made his famous early 20th century jumps. While, simultaneously, Lightman--wonderful name for a physicist turned novelist--overlays washes of human time: e.g. a mother, who's child has grown up and moved away, perceives it. Time intermingled with love assume meta-metaphor status in this gentle delight.

Desert Queen by Janet Wallach
Desert Queen

Finally finished and the best was last; a good biography and better foundation read for understanding early 20th century Middle East history. Gertrude Bell really was a genius, if anyone is. Feel badly that I grew up never having heard of her when her adventures and achievements make those of Amelia Earhardt look like flash-in-the-pan publicity stunts. This book also reveals just how arrogant and often silly ignorant the US efforts in this complex part of the world are--makes me blush.

Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier
Remarkable Creatures

An amazing gateway into the times of Jane Austen and Charles Darwin; they could have crossed paths and certainly knew some of the same people and now I do too.
