Desert Queen by Janet Wallach

Finally finished and the best was last; a good biography and better foundation read for understanding early 20th century Middle East history. Gertrude Bell really was a genius, if anyone is. Feel badly that I grew up never having heard of her when her adventures and achievements make those of Amelia Earhardt look like flash-in-the-pan publicity stunts. This book also reveals just how arrogant and often silly ignorant the US efforts in this complex part of the world are--makes me blush.

An amazing gateway into the times of Jane Austen and Charles Darwin; they could have crossed paths and certainly knew some of the same people and now I do too.
