Good story, but missing the essential point. The events occurred during a period of high tension between the US and our potential enemy, the Soviet Union. In fact, the US, with its allies in the UN, were in combat with the proxies of the Soviet Union. Although Mr. Siegel makes the argument that there were no secrets to reveal, military readiness is and should be carefully guarded information. In this case, the readiness of the B-29 fleet, the number that could be called on a mission, was the secret. Where the military made the misstep was in keeping that evanescent information secret. Readiness information that's a year or two old has little value in itself.
