The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff
The Monsters of Templeton

yinNYC, June 12, 2012

I just received a review of this book in my "Daily Dose" and while I nearly always refrain from writing negative reviews, I feel others should be warned: don't believe the hype. While the premise is interesting, the writing, as the NY Times review states, shows "inexperience." I found it to be in dire need of a good editor with basic mistakes that could be ironed out in any MFA workshop. Overall, while there were some interesting moments, this was a highly disappointing read and honestly, read more like a memoir-as-fiction than an interestingly crafted novel. Most disappointing: the great potential of the monster was lost through all the self-reflection/navel-gazing of the central character.
