Ghost Ship
Ghost Ship

zyrowan, July 14, 2006

This film has one of the best beginnings of any horror film to date. The first 10 or so minutes of the film are worth watching the entire film for. Unfortunately, when Ghost Ship arrives at its "exciting conclusion", the film falls into the craptrap that most of Hollywood seems to be stuck in. Still... The beginning... damn!

Ursula
Ursula

Ursula is a very charming story of two who fall in love long before they can fully conceive what love is exactly. This book is rich with mythology, and I'm not clear how much of it is historical and how much comes from the mind of its authors. It took me a few pages to break through the chaos of what was occuring, but once I did, I found a truly wonderful story that pulled a lot of the same heart strings as Craig Thompson's wonderful book, Goodbye, Chunky Rice.

Oddville
Oddville

zyrowan, June 21, 2006

I work in a bookstore, and I can't see the words Oni Press, without picking up the title to have a peak. What a fun and quick read Oddville turned out to be. With an utter lack of focus, Oddville seems like the daydreams of a person afflicted with A.D.D. I look forward to seeking out more of Jay Stephens' creations.

Grave of the Fireflies - Collector's Edition
Grave of the Fireflies - Collector's Edition

zyrowan, June 19, 2006

From mastermind Isao Takahata comes a tragic tale of two post-WWII Japanese orphans struggling to figure out where they fit in. After unfortunate circumstances leave them without parents, a brother and sister keep on the move between friends and family members only to find that home is not something you can reclaim.

This is simply one of the best anime films ever created. However, I warn that you will cry, and you will be affected. As you should be. The story may be fictional, but its origins are not, and all of humanity should be forced to witness the terror that bombs and guns unleash upon this world.

A truly beautiful film. However, the voices are often difficult to hear and understand.
