Hare With Amber Eyes
by
Edmund de Waal

Dual narrative threads of Edmund De Waal’s familial history, together with the history of 264 netsuke (precise and beautiful wood and ivory carvings no larger than a matchbox) which he inherited, fuel this fascinating story of the Ephrussi family’s journey from Odessa to Paris and Vienna, and their and the netsuke’s subsequent diaspora to London, New York, Hollywood and Tokyo. Thoughtful and beautifully written -- overall a great read.

Invisible Bridge
by
Orringer, Julie

The Invisible Bridge is a beautifully written novel about pre-war, wartime, and post-war Paris and Budapest. It tells the story of the love and travails of a young man from Budapest who is an architecture student in Paris. The language is gorgeous with wonderfully apt descriptions of both people, places and events in Paris. The Invisible Bridge is one of those rare novels which depicts the universal through the particular.
