Edge On The Sword

Don't let the characters' names trip you up, this is a good book. It tells of how a young woman prepares for an arranged marriage and prepares to become one of the greatest female military leaders in English history. I really appreciated the author's historical notes, explaining where she got the ideas for her story, and letting the reader know what is fact and what is fiction.

The Hollow Kingdom

As a series opener this book is the tops! We learn all about the secret lives of goblins, and who knew they would be so fascinating! But be warned: when you go with Kate through the front door of the Goblin kingdom you may not escape... at least until you finish the book. Worth reading, impossilbe not to enjoy.

Crown Duel

I love, love, love this book. I'm so happy that I bought it so that I can read and re-read it. Go with Mel through the hard days of war, of poverty, of ignorance, and then with her into the whirlwind of political intrigue and elegant flirtation. She is a wonderful role-model for young women: strong, brave, willing to learn, a true friend and sister. Also enjoy the added short story at the end of this edition, so that you can see just how she spends her "happily ever after." You can't help but fall in love with this novel!

Midnighters 03 Blue Noon
by
Scott Westerfeld

This was a bitter-sweet way to end the triology. The story is full of excitement and adventure, but also real issues that we all have to be deal with: family relationships, the desire to escape, etc. Not an ideal ending, but possibly the only one that makes sense.

Midnighters 02 Touching Darkness
by
Westerfeld, Scott

When I finished the first book I just couldn't wait to read the next one. Westerfeld does an amazing job of picking up this book where the first one leaves off. I was quite impressed at the fast-paced action and the quick thinking by the characters. Not an hour is wasted as the events unfold, and I don't regret a moment of reading it, even if it had to happen during the regular 24 hours.

This book captivated me! I got immersed in the blue world right with Jessica, and couldn't put it down until I got to the end. Word to the wise: have the second book on hand so that you can keep going with the story!

Man Who Forgot How To Read A Memoir
by
Howard Engel
Wendy S.
, May 18, 2008
I was impressed and inspired by Engel's account of his life before and since his debilitating stroke. After learning about the effects of his stroke it's hard to believe that he was able to continue to pursue his career in writing. His writing is accessible to a wide variety of readers, and the sheer stamina it took for him to write at all makes this a book worth owning.

All American Girl 02 Ready or Not
by
Meg Cabot
Wendy S.
, May 18, 2008
I was very disappointed in this sequel to All-American Girl. I really enjoyed the first novel, but I found all the talk about "going all the way" in this second book very disturbing. I really don't think that we need that kind of message going out to young women. I'm very sorry to learn that Cabot's teen books are melding into the adult genre. It is a sad comment on the loss of youth and innocence in society in general.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It's a sweet look at falling in love for a second time. It's fun, and full of tender little moments. I loved that we got to see both sides of the romance. Enjoy it!!

Marigold 01 Once Upon A Marigold
by

If I were back in middle school I could write one heck of a book report on this book! There are so many different areas to analyze. For instance, you could trace the different fairytale character types that are portrayed, and link them to the traditional tales; or you could look for the mixed metaphores that Christian has learned from his Dad, the troll. And what's more, you would have fun reading the story! This is fun for parents and teens alike.

In the Coils of the Snake
by
Clare B. Dunkle

I think this is the best book in the series - but read the other ones too! Miranda is a confused teenager, who loses the life she has known, the man who has raised her, and the future she was promised within a few short chapters. In return she winds up with a life under the stars and the chance at happiness. Her highs and lows are well described, and the story is seamless. As you read, look for what the title really means. It certainly added something extra to my reading, and I know it will yours! Enjoy!

Close Kin
by
Clare B. Dunkle
Wendy S.
, August 11, 2007
Stories of elves and goblins are not uncommon, but Ms. Dunkle's novel shows them in an entirely new light. The search for kin, for love, for belonging is wrapped in a fantasic adventure. The evils of miseducation and abuse are exposed as this wonderful tale unfolds. I enjoyed this second installement of the Hollow Kingdom Trilogy. Read it!!
