How Democracy Ends
by
David Runciman
Andrea B
, June 22, 2018
This book is engaging and easy to read. Using a wide range of historical examples, the author explains that we might be looking in the wrong places for signs of democracy's demise. Is democracy currently in its "cranky obsolescence"? Is Mark Zuckerberg more dangerous than Donald Trump? I don't want to give away any more. Lots of thought-provoking material here.

Frugal Vegan: Affordable, Easy, and Delicious Vegan Cooking
by

This book looks like it will live up to its title. Most vegan cookbooks I have seen feature beautiful food that is way too complicated to actually prepare. This one does not rely on exotic ingredients. It also has tips for shopping, cooking in bulk, and freezing food properly.

The Whites
by
Harry Brandt
Andrea B
, April 27, 2015
This is an excellent novel that happens to be a crime novel. Brandt/Price develops each character, even the minor ones, along with a very good story. Each member of a former group of NYPD cops has a White, or the one that got away, the criminal who was never brought to justice. The story is about these five old colleagues, in particular Detective Billy Graves, who is faced with new developments regarding the old cases as well as a sub-plot involving his own family.

So Youve Been Publicly Shamed
by
Jon Ronson
Andrea B
, April 27, 2015
After reading an article by Jon Ronson about one of the events covered in this book I really wanted to read it, and I was not disappointed. He covers real deceptions (plagiarism, fiction passed off as fact) as well as seemingly less serious offenses (stupid or tasteless jokes or photos). In the context of the Internet and the constant vigilance of social media, shaming is immediate and may be impossible to overcome. The many interviews are illuminating and he also follows his own changing attitudes.

The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game
by
Pilon, Mary
Andrea B
, April 27, 2015
I never knew Monopoly had such a complicated history. This is a well-researched book that covers all the people involved, the rivalries between them, the growth and workings of the game companies. The only thing I found difficult was that every time a new player was introduced nearly every story was taken back to the same point in time, so it was a bit repetitive.

Behind the Shock Machine The Untold Story of the Notorious Milgram Psychology Experiments
by
Perry, Gina
Andrea B
, March 19, 2015
I read this book after taking an online MOOC on Social Psychology. The Milgram experiments were featured as the classic proof that people will resort to evil behavior without much prompting. After reading this book I was surprised that the study was presented as universally accepted, or at least without controversy. In Behind the Shock Machine, Gina Perry pulls away the curtain and presents a more complete picture of the Milgram experiments. It's not that some people did not apply maximum shocks to others, but there were many more arms of the study that did not have the same result. Also, participants were subjected to extreme pressure that could have affected the outcomes. This is not to say the experiments were worthless or that Ms. Perry's conclusions should not be critiqued, but it seems clear that the traditional interpretation of Milgram's work is suspect.
