Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Redeployment

This collection of stories offers an insider's look at what it is really like to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan. Some narratives take place there, others back in the US. I found the returnees' stories most affecting. Some stories used so many acronyms that they were hard to follow, but I decided maybe that was the point. For me not all the voices were distinct but the stories as a whole were still very powerful.

Where Nobody Knows Your Name Life In the Minor Leagues of Baseball
by
John Feinstein
ARB

In this book, John Feinstein gives a detailed picture of what everyday life is like in the minor leagues, what it's like waiting for that call to the majors, and especially how players and managers cope with shuttling between the two. It amazes me how he was able to organize so much information about the minor league system and so many different people - players, coaches, managers, umpires, front-office people. My favorite fact was that a man named Dave Rosenfield still does the 144-game schedule for the International League by hand. The book can seem a bit long and repetitive, but so can a baseball game.

Sweet Tooth
by
Ian McEwan
ARB

This is a story told by a former spy forty years after the fact, after all the deceptions and lies have been put to rest. Or have they? A young woman recruited to work as an MI5 agent during the '70s recounts her experiences as a hapless player in a project called Sweet Tooth. McEwan's descriptions of the secret services are sly and often funny. He tells stories within stories, and I found myself wondering how he could possibly wrap it up. When he did it was very amusing.

Ghost Map
by
Steven Johnson

I enjoy reading about medical history and knew about John Snow's work on cholera, but this book really puts it into context. Johnson not only makes the mid-19th century come alive but draws parallels to the effects of modern-day urbanization on public health and the challenges the world will face in the future.
