Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Behind the Beautiful Forevers Life Death & Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
by
Katherine Boo

What I do not see, I cannot know. Except now I know. Behind the Beautiful Forevers took me to the slums of Mumbai India and I will never be the same. With Katherine Boo's award winning writing, I could almost smell the stench and feel the anquish of the real life characters. Yet, this was not a morose or sad expose', it was a lovely testament to hope and the human spirit. I was moved and will forever remember.

The Road

This book has earned a place on my shelf. At times while reading it I could barely breath, right along with the characters. The stark story takes place after the apocalypse and the world as we know it has been destroyed. But at least two people survive and this tale is between a protective father and his young son as they struggle to stay alive. The story is not cheery, but is compelling. And never before I have witnessed such skill at using the sparce text to add to the destitute circumstance. It almost stands out like a third character. Any other writer would not have succeeded, and it left me in awe of Carmac McCarthy's talent.

A book that can cause me to cry is an amazing read. This one had it all -- and I wept. Perhaps because I grew up in the south with black maids, or perhaps it's just because I am aware of people besides myself! Either way, the hype about this book is true, it IS that good. And believe it or not, the movie was well done also. They GOT the characters. Bottom line, great read. Grab it now.

Before I Go to Sleep

Get Ready! All your other activities will have to wait until you finish this one. I'm not usually a mystery/suspense reader but this one had just the right psycological element to keep me on the edge. Christine has a rare type of amnesia -- she wakes each day without memories. So who can she trust? How will she live with this daily uncertainty? The empathy I felt for her and the surprising resolution were a joy to read. Bravo for this new writer!
