by
Chuck Palahniuk
Karl
, February 12, 2009
What a wonderful blend of experiences, insight, and history within the Portland community. Dark, witty, and comedic this book will leave you laughing and wanting to read more. A quick off beat read providing the reader with a unique blend Portland encounters and collection of things to do while visiting this fringe city.

Understanding the Palestinian Isaeli Conflict A Primer Updated Edition
by
Phyllis Bennis
Karl
, January 14, 2009
An excellent primer this book provides the reader a basic, yet comprehensive, understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. One also gains an understanding for the foreign polocies of the United States as related to the conflict. I found the question and answer format also lends the book to utilization as a quick reference quide to specific questions the reader may have in regards to the conflict. The format also makes it easy to go back and reflect on questions that relate to one another as they arise throughout the book. This relatively short read, easily finished in a few hours, has a brevity that I found somewhat disappointing. Questions are answered with a relative lack of discussion and depth. However, for the novice with no previous knowledge of the conflict it is an excellent tool.

Paul Fleischman
Karl
, January 11, 2008
Paul Fleischman has created a literary adventure of the human heart and soul with this book. It will capture the spirit and conscience of all its readers from the young adult onward. A young man's tragedy turns into a journey of self discovery highlighting what becomes his triumph as he transverses the United States in remembrance of the young girl he kills in a car accident. Beautifully written in his own unique style intertwining and interconnecting multiple faucets of the story, Fleischman takes the reader on a literary rollercoaster guiding them along an emotional adolescent coming of age. Embark on a voyage of self discovery with this book and the struggle of human emotions associated with adolescence and transitioning to adulthood made even more difficult through the tragedy associated with death and the compassion it can bring out in all of us.

Creation An Appeal to Save Life on Earth
by
Edward O Wilson
Karl
, January 05, 2008
E.O. Wilson is an entemologist I have been following since I first heard his name as a college student. His works have had a significant impact on the understanding of biodiversity, biogeography, and concern for our enviornment on a global scale while showing us how the most local of impacts can make a difference. In this book he appeals to religious and scientific leaders to join forces and save our planets natural biological resources. The humanization of the environment has have an everlasting impact on our planet. This book is an eloquently put appeal to save our planet before it is too late. I recommend this book as it will give you a fresh look into the significant roles we have in preserving not just our planets future, but ours along with it. Karl - Mannheim Germany

Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
by
Bill Bryson
Karl
, December 29, 2007
A brilliant read and one that's sure to keep you laughing. Bill Bryson traces his hike along the Appalachian Trail with his witty and humorous writing style that had me laughing at every bend in the trail. It is a revitalizing book that had me off my chair and walking through my local woods to find a cozy place to set down, back against a rock or log, and read this book in nature as if I was living his adventure in person. I found myself lost in the pages and not wanting to put his book down. It is a wonderful and enchanting insight into a unique niche of Americana and the wonderful things available to see and do in the American wilderness. It is as much a discovery of self as it is a discovery about our country and its wilderness. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Human Resources Stories
by
Josh Goldfaden
Karl
, December 29, 2007
Human Resources is an enchanting, humorous, witty, sophisticated and sexy collection of short stories that will have you laughing with every page turn. I found myself wrapped up in each story as though I was living it through the characters Josh Goldfaden painted on his pages with his unique and intriguing writing style. You'll find yourself anxious to turn the page and see what happens next, at least I did. I found the book to be a fun read leaving me unable to focus on anything else when reading it and thinking about it long after I put it down. While you might find it an easy read, you'll find it a fun one. I loved it. Karl - Mannheim Germany

Mixed: An Anthology of Short Fiction on the Multiracial Experience
by
Chandra Prasad
Karl
, June 17, 2007
This wonderful anthology contributes to ones understaning of the multicultural and interatial experiences sweeping our country. The diversity of everchangning human relationships and the impact of multicultural perceptions are beautifully expressed and represented in this wonderful read. Defining the "American Experience" is an extention of the multicultural and interatial relationships intertwined thougout our society and the stigma they present for us to overcome. The experiences of living the multicultural and interacial life contribute wonderfully to the fiction the authors have provided for this book allowing the reader to relate to the struggles of a mixed America and mixed world.
