Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Voice and Diction: A Program for Improvement
by
Eisenson, Jon
Joanna Cazden
, March 17, 2009
I have used earlier editions of this book for decades, in my work as a voice & speech therapist. It not only covers all aspects of voice & diction, but the diction areas have very useful sections for overcoming common speech errors (for example: word pairs, phrases and sentences that contrast "w" and "r".) I also favor this book over other similar texts because it uses adult vocabulary but the practice quotations are not super-flowery, complex literature. The updates for this edition look appropriate. My ONLY quarrel is the price; speech communication and theater arts students should not have to pay that much!

Vocal Wisdom
by
Giovanni B Lamperti
Joanna Cazden
, June 27, 2006
A beloved classic of inspirational comments for serious singers, edited from comments noted during singing lessons with revered teacher Lamperti. In the 19th century, the actual mechanics of breath and larynx were not as well understood as today. So his descriptions of anatomy etc. are not completely accurate. Nevertheless Lamperti appreciates the psychology and intuitive aspects of singing, especially how to concentrate and practice so that mastery of technique does not over-ride one's essential desire to make music. Just a lovely little volume for any vocal library.
