Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Joseph Anton A Memoir
by
Salman Rushdie
Angela Ross
, March 21, 2015
After a fatwa was issued by the Ayatollah Khomeni in Iran against Salman Rushdie in response to his book, The Satanic Verses, Rushdie was forced to live in secrecy, with armed guards around the clock. He took the pseudonym "Joseph Anton" to honor two of his favorite writers, Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekov. His memoir of that period, effectively written as a third person narrative, gives a detailed account of what life was like, but much more than that. It is full of literary, philosophical and historical references. Even in this restricted life, he still socialized with major international literary figures and other important intellects of our time. He entertains readers in his wryly humorous comments and enlightens us on many religious issues. This is a powerful, funny and edifying book. Highly recommended!

That Fine Italian Hand
by
Paul Hofmann
Angela Ross
, October 04, 2012
If you love Italy and its culture, this book is essential to a better understanding of how and why things work there. Written by Paul Hofmann, who was chief of the New York Times Rome bureau for many years, it reveals details about a wide variety of topics including everything from tax dodging, education, espresso, the mafia, and Mussolini, to history, family and contrasts between North and South. Just as Hofmann did in his guide to 100 smaller Italian cities, Cento Citta', he shows an intimate, affectionate and entertaining knowledge of a multi-layered country.

Who needs computers,iPhones or even Google when "the Feed" resides in your brain? Your desires, preferences and interests are stored and come back to you in ads and suggestions on the feed. A story, although intended for the young adult audience, resonates with all of us as. The future is here and it knows who you are and what you want. Fascinating and prescient story.

Jews, God and History: Second Edition
by
Dimont, Max I.
Angela Ross
, December 18, 2010
One of the most interesting history books I've read, it covers such a broad spectrum of periods and events, yet in an appropriately detailed way, that it inspires further reading on the many topics included. Dimont proves to be a brilliant historian and researcher. It clarifies current events as well as introducing one to the amazing history of the jewish people. Highly recommended.
