Ender's Game: Ender Wiggin Saga 1
by
Orson Scott Card
JayLv99

This book is brilliant. Orson Scott Card grabs you at the very beginning and never lets go - this is a book you won't want to put down once you've started. Card manages to put you into the shoes of his protagonists quite well, making them somehow believable as people even though if you really analyze it it's quite fantastic. When Ender Wiggins goes through troubles, you'll feel as if you are too. When Ender experiences victory, you'll feel elated. The emotions of the characters are very real, and cleverly written. There's also a lot of humor. Card delights in wordplay and biting wit. His style seems a mix of Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. I'd highly recommend this book for any fan of science fiction, fantasy, or military stories. In particular, anyone who enjoyed "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein would love this book.

Foundation and Earth: Foundation 5
by
Isaac Asimov

Quite possibly the best book in the Foundation series, this is also the last. Asimov is at his finest, throwing plot twist after plot twist at the reader, but with Asimov that's usual. Asimov is known for his intricately woven plots, and this book certainly has that. In particular, the ending will have you on the edge of your seat anticipating the finale. Asimov also is at the top of his game with his characters' interactions. Asimov shows that he has quite a sense of humor, and really knows how people play off one another with the discussions between main characters Bliss and Golan Trevize. There were several points within the book that I laughed out loud, and for me that's quite unusual (and drew many stares). I highly recommend this book for any fan of Asimov, however I'd advise reading the first several Foundation books before this one, that way you're up to date on the plot.

Golden Apples of the Sun
by
Ray Bradbury

This is a prime example of some of Ray Bradbury's finest. From beginning to end this book grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. Bradbury gives us some extremely bizarre tales in this collection, reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe in some respects. Bradbury proves once again with this collection he deserves to be ranked with the "Big Three" of Science Fiction - Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein. The short stories cover a wide variety of sub-genres within the Science Fiction label, my personal favorite being the thought-provoking "The Exiles", which asks whether we live for literature or does literature live for us. I highly recommend this book to anybody who enjoys reading - if you've never read Science Fiction before, give this a shot. If you're buying this for someone else, have it shipped to your house and riffle through the pages before gift-wrapping it. You'll be glad you did.
