Powell's Staff:
Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Book of Mormon Girl: A Memoir of an American Faith
by
Joanna Brooks
pourfarm
, October 19, 2012
This memoir is extremely well-written by any measure. Joanna Brooks tells a heartwarming story of how she was raised in the faith and grew to explore the conflicts that her religion presented to her as an adult. This is a strong personal statement of faith and a determination to work through her devotion to her faith when social/political conflict challenged her. This is a book that will delight and appeal to ANYONE who has experienced personal conflicts of faith and survived.

Flora's Wreath

I read both fiction and nonfiction omnivorously and, I have to admit, most of it blends together so that when someone asks me what I've been reading, it's often difficult to reply quickly with a title....but...FLORA'S WREATH was a stopper for me for several reasons: first, it's beautifully written by any measure with nary a sappy or overdramatized moment in it, which is surprising given the topic, and it addresses a contemporary issue I would never purposely choose to read about, regardless of its very readable novel form. This novel will impact the ways you think about your own life and the lives of others; more remarkable is that the setting is the late 1800's where three women embark upon a very dangerous path and somehow conquer their fears; it reaches across one-hundred-plus years to encourage us all to reflect seriously on our own values; I guarantee it will not leave you for a very long time.

Rules of Civility
by
Amor Towles

What an incredible read; this is one of those rare books that I read more and more slowly because I didn't want it to end. How can a male writer know so well what is in his female characters' minds, particularly that of his main character Katey Kontent. This is truly a rags to riches to rags (at least in one case)ride that will either take you back to your own flaming youth, or it will catch you up in anticipating what may lie ahead...I want more from Amor Towles.

Your instructions on this website say, "Comment on it", so I will, not seeing a requirement to have read it before commenting. I just found out about this book. If this is the same zany Lian Dolan who was the youngest of the five Satellite sisters of radio fame some years ago, you can be sure I will be running, not walking, to my nearest Powell's to purchase this book..based on the sisters' broadcasts, I'm expecting it to be very funny and insightful...as well as autobiographical?

About Alice
by
Calvin Trillin
pourfarm
, January 09, 2007
Over my years of reading Trillin, I feel I've gotten to know him and his family. I've had the pleasure of speaking to him twice when he's been on book tours in the Pacific Northwest....he blushes at praise...he is a kind and gentle man Now I want to go back and reread his earlier books, with this lovely book in mind....this is a treasure.
