Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Full Frontal Feminism A Young Womans Guide to Why Feminism Matters
by
Jessica Valenti
astroix
, April 27, 2007
Jessica Valenti's Full Frontal Feminism is a smart, passionate, accessible introduction to feminist issues affecting young women. Valenti covers a range of topics including sexuality in our pop/porn world, political involvement, violence, and what it means to be an activist in your own right. This book is written in a language reminiscent of your cool older sister visiting from college-it's driven, profane where it counts, and ready to share newly acquired knowledge with the world. Full Frontal Feminism is highly recommended. For younger people, it is a reminder to shun the tired, boring stereotypes about feminism and start agitating for justice. For generations that have lived through women's lib, this book is a fresh look at feminism today and why it (still) matters.

Blankets
by
Thompson, Craig
astroix
, January 01, 2007
Craig Thompson's "Blankets" is an extraordinary autobiographical sketch which shares the experience of growing up in a rural, conservative, fundamentalist Christian world. The author's spiritual awakening and rebellion against the status quo are detailed in a series of beautiful images. This graphic novel seamlessly integrates flowing images with panels to tell the story. Coming-of-age is a central part of this story, yet Thompson manages to hit on subjects which resonate beyond the "Catcher and the Rye" group. In short, beautiful story, innovative and unique graphics.
