Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Make No Law The Sullivan Case & The Firs
by
Anthony Lewis
soundsourcet
, March 21, 2008
While Lewis provides an in-depth account of a pivotal moment in First Amendment history, the thorough detailing of the Sullivan case can also be the one aspect that detracts from this book appealing to all readers. Lewis's storytelling, at times, can become ensnared in a little too much legal detail. But for those interested in journalism, law, and/or free speech in America, the book provides a thought-provoking way to learn First Amendment history beyond the standard textbook synopsis that most people forget once they finish their schooling.

Professor & The Madman

Winchester's account of Minor's story is engrossing, shocking, salacious, and - most importantly - true. You might pause the next few times you delve into a pocket O.E.D. - you also might start picturing Minor's cell along with those 5 definitions you find, knowing many may have come from this brilliant and disturbed man.

Cinderella Man The Shooting Script

I would love to get my hands on this, since I've only seen a rough transposition of the script. Little moments, such as the Jim's dream of a "thick, juicy steak" in the "Past Due" chapter from the DVD, are subtle, simple and poetic.
