I bought this book after listening to the author read at Wordstock. Despite the reading, I was expecting an interesting post-apocalyptic tale that was well-crafted, but not atypical of the genre as far as the writing was concerned. Perhaps some will find this statement too lofty, but what I found instead, was more of an epic poem. The story is bleak. The setting is dangerous, cold, lonely. It is, at times, oddly charming despite these things. And, once in a while, a line is breathtakingly beautiful and sad. At first, the writing style caused me to pause and reread a bit, but as the story developed, I found myself completely lost in verse with no concern or need for the grammar of prose. It is a stunning and heartbreaking book.

This book should be filed under "classic summer read." It is the perfect beach book. The story is fast-paced and goes down easy.

This is a great summer read. The story held my attention while the author's descriptions of the sights and sounds of 17th century German made me feel like I was there. Frequently, when I'm reading fiction, I find myself skimming lengthy descriptions that aren't as interesting to me as what the characters are doing or saying, but not this time. Potzsch gave me just enough information to paint a scene without filling in every last blank to the point of exhaustion.
