Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Orange Is the New Black My Year in a Womens Prison

Piper Kerman

A self-serving diatribe by a selfish egomaniac. Yes, I did finish the book - to see if Ms. Kerman would ever take responsibility for her actions. She didn't - she thinks that she is far too wonderful to accept any blame for the disruption and heartache her actions caused. I have lost friends and family members due to drug abuse problems, and there is nothing about Ms. Kerman's involvement in drug trafficking that is OK. Don't give this woman a dime of your hard-earned money.

If Walls Could Talk an Intimate History of the Home

I am very interested in English social history, and even though I've read a lot about it, this book was full of things I'd never even heard of! I thought about it for weeks after I finished it, and kept on asking friends and family, "Did you know...?" A very well written and wide ranging overview of life in England throughout the centuries.

Nella Last's War: The Second World War Diaries of Housewife, 49
by
Nella Last

This was one of the best books I read last year. Nella Last was a gifted natural writer. I accepted (after hearing it for so long) that every person in World War II Britain was brave and strong and honorable. In this book, Nella Last lets us know that just wasn't so. There were many decent people doing the right thing in very challenging circumstances. But, there were also a few mean, cheap, sneaky people taking advantage of their friends and neighbors. A real eye opener about Churchill's Britain. Read this book - it's wonderful.
