Mr Penumbras 24 Hour Bookstore

This book is amazing, and my pick for the best book of 2012! It's like a bookish version of Ernest Cline's 'Ready Player One', which was another of my favorite books this year, but it also has touches of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's cemetery of books series. It reminded me of a lot of other things, but at the same time, it was also entirely its *own book*. It's not just about books and bookstores (though that would be plenty for me), it's also about people and power, puzzles and intrigue, hope and momentum, and all sorts of good things, and just in case that's not enough for you, the cover actually *glows in the dark*! Also, it added the latin term festina lente to my vocabulary, which I am making my motto for 2013. (Look it up.) This book has a place on my headboard / bookshelf where I can reach for it frequently. I will definitely be reading this book again!

Age of Miracles

This novel is a great book for all sorts of people: young adult readers, fans of apocalyptic/disaster novels, adults who appreciate a good young adult read, and people who just like to read! Julia's story is an interesting combination of 'day in the life' fiction, where the characters go about living their everyday life, and end-time writing, where we realize just how close we are to death and/or great suffering, and adding a young girl whose life is already changing in so many ways... it makes an explosively entertaining combination. This is absolutely a book that I will be re-reading, now that I know the ending, to rediscover how they got there.

Chaperone
by
Laura Moriarty

As a fan of great classic actors from the early days of film, hearing about this book and the main subject (Louise Brooks), I was really excited to read it. So I was quite surprised to find that the other character, the chaperone of the title, was as much of a character as Louise, if not more so -- and even more surprising, to like her part in it, and like her. Louise Brooks was an interesting person and the author, Laura Moriarty managed to give us something of a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the real person behind her movie persona. She has obviously done a lot of research, and yet by giving Cora (the chaperone) the point of view, still allowed Louise to keep some of her own thoughts and motives secret, as I imagine she would have liked it.

Sandcastle Girls A Novel
by
Chris Bohjalian

While I'm sure that Chris Bohjalian will be writing other novels (many more, I hope), I think "The Sandcastle Girls" will go down in history as his best. This book is a multi-generation epic filled with soul and depth, and Bohjalian has surely put his heart into it -- it shows. From a novel, I usually expect just a few entertaining hours and a good story. Rarely does a book make me want to seek out non-fiction books to learn more about the subject, and setting and the time period like this one does. I had never heard of the Armenian genocide before I read this book, and in fact, it's referred to as "The slaughter you know next to nothing about". That said, this book is not just a downer about people dying, but also a love story and stories of people who beat the odds in ways you never imagined possible. Definitely a must-read for Chris Bohjalian fans, and for people who've never read his work before, too!
