Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Mistress Ruby Ties It Together: A Dominatrix Takes On Sex, Power, and the Secret Lives of Upstanding Citizens
by
Robin Shamburg

This is a very honest book, for what it is. Unfortunately, what it is seems to amount to the accounts of the dungeon experience of a woman that was not really there for her own gratification, but to pay the bills. Certainly it paints fetishes and kinks in a strange and different light when they are described by an impartial observer. Robin Shamburg is very funny, and nothing short of forthright. I'd be more interested to read her writings about the sort of sex life she actually enjoys, for one, or perhaps the sort of crossword puzzles it pleases her to solve...

Kinkorama Dispatches From The Front Line
by
Simon Sheppard

Sheppard's book is a wickedly funny and painfully honest look at the peculiar realities of kink and the very strange human motives that drive them. More than anything, it is astutely observant, even if the reader isn't a gay man but some other creature of the land of perversion.

Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives: How to Use Meditation, Yoga and Other Techniques to Give Your Child the Perfect Start in Life, from Conception to
by
Deepak Chopra

I'm not, ordinarily, an enthusiastic reader of Chopra. In facing the looming prospect of new parenthood, though, I was seduced by his title, and find myself grateful for his beautiful pointers in this adventure (which seems like more of one than it had before picking up the book.) It's a pristine invitation to a really present and loving pregnancy.
