Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. MR Wilkinson's Favourite Vegetables: A Cookbook to Celebrate the Seasons
by
Matt Wilkinson

, March 28, 2014
So much time has passed since the last time I purchased a book that fed all my senses. The cover is not just awesome art and font but touchable sculpture! I had to pick it up. A book about gardens and recipes, did I need another? The first text was not the copyright / acknowledgements… but a Thank You for buying his book (all the legal stuff is in the back)! That sets the style of this lovely read, yes a cookbook to be read cover to cover. This is a book you will read, setting aside your smart phone / computer as you sip your Mocha. This is the type of book you want others to watch in envy as you read. They will glance over and remember when they once could be lost in a book that enveloped them in deep excitement and peace. Matt has an amazing writing style full of humor, great advice, and knowledge on his top 25 vegetables. He reminds us that being human requires the beautiful planning, cooking, and serving each meal and snack, not just eating. The book will not have you to stopping on the way home to pick up a list of veges. You will open your tech of choice to locate the nearest Farmer’s Market, or CSA. You will begin saving glass jars to fill with raw spices from spice markets not the local super all-in-one stores. You will take the time to grow, like a garden.

Apartment Gardening

Found this book at the Seattle Library. The advice is complete and well researched. But I bought the book because Amy Pennington style of writing. She is the neighbor next door coming over showing just how easy it would be to turn my small apartment into a living urban garden. She writes not only the what and how to plant but the why and how. This is important because when I want to try a new plant I now know to ask what the plant needs to see if it is even possible to grow it indoors.
