Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

For anyone with apocalyptic tendencies, this book is a must. Follow the lives of over a dozen characters that survive after a meteor hits the Earth and severely disrupts normal life. From community to cannibalism you'll know who to look out for after the 'big one' hits.

Pattern Recognition: Blue Ant 1

Stunning. Gibson has taken a new turn in the realm of fantasy with this novel. He creates a plausible story delving into the life of a marketing consultant in real-world situations and yet strips down reality to zeros and ones. One of his best works yet.

You never knew you could feel so much until you read this book. The fantastic setting allows you to escape reality, the childish insight allows you to relate and the psychology of what happens next blows your mind. Psychological science fiction with a heart.

Through satire and history you will find yourself lost in a land that is so surreal and yet so close. Cyberpunk, Sumerians and heavy-metal geekery with an IQ of 223. One of the most imaginative hard-core cyberpunk novels of our time.

I have hundreds of books in my collection and this is the only book that I have bought over two dozen copies of to give away to my friends. There is something magical about the afterlife that is simple and touching, expressed so eloquently in this novel. A must for any bibliophile, and for anyone who wants to know what comes next...
