Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Nothing Daunted The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West
by
Dorothy Wickenden
Andrea Ferguson
, January 01, 2012
This is not the best book I read this year as I have no idea what that would mean. However, of all the books I read this year, this one brought me the most pleasure in widest variety of ways. I loved the fascinating story, the larger history of a place surrounding the personal history of the two women, the willingness of two young women of their class and time to tear up the script for how they should live, the depth of feeling of all the people in the story, the surprise of the people in this back of beyond place having such a strong desire to give their kids a good school, the author's hunt for the information and the letters she was sure must exist.

Summer Without Men
by
Siri Hustvedt
Andrea Ferguson
, September 28, 2011
While not a completely perfect novel, Summer Without Men is a perfect example of how a beautifully crafted, tightly written short novel can be as challenging, idea-packed, and enjoyable as one of the big, sprawling, pages-overflowing novels that seem to dominate both book reviews and book sales.

Read this wonderfully told, very funny novel and you are sure to join me in wondering why Irene Dische is so much better known in Europe than in the States.

The Warmth Of Other Suns: The Epic Story Of America's Great Migration
by
Isabel Wilkerson
Andrea Ferguson
, September 01, 2011
Wilkerson takes what could have been a dry, academic subject and makes the mass migration of black americans out of the south into a vivid and compelling book by interweaving her solid research with the fascinatingly told stories of three individuals who made the journey, each with their own, very specific experience of trying to find a better life.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot
Andrea Ferguson
, January 01, 2011
While providing the reader with a well-written and fascinating exploration of the HeLa cells, Skloot adds emotional depth and true human interest with her beautiful telling of the lives of Henrietta and her family, all of whom exist disconnected from and by the scientists whose research the HeLa cells engendered. Though filled with scientific information and psychological and sociological insight into both the scientists and the Lacks family, the book is as un-putdownable as the best page-turning thriller.

Scent of Rain & Lightning
by
Nancy Pickard
Andrea Ferguson
, May 10, 2010
As in the equally good Virgin of Small Plains, Nancy Pickard uses her finely crafted writing to move her well-developed characters through a strong narrative and a Kansas landscape that is as vivid as the characters inhabiting it.
