For Darkness Shows the Stars 01

I love Jane Austen's Persuasion, and I love science fiction and fantasy, so I loved the combination in this book. Not many stories any more are about good people giving up what they want for what is best for everyone but still finding a way to get a happy ending. Elliot's sacrifices and thought-processes felt real, as did Kai's reactions.

Entwined

How do you deal with grief? Just as people express love in different ways, they deal with grief in different ways. When the queen dies, the king imposes a harsh life of mourning on his twelve daughters before leaving the castle and his children behind. Princess Azalea, oldest of the twelve, feels the king has abandoned them just when they need him most. The girls deal with grief in their own way, practicing the dances their mother taught them. When they learn of the Keeper and his secret place beneath the castle where they can dance as much as they wish, Azalea feels they can finally free themselves of their father's stifling rules. The Keeper, however, has his own agenda and uses the girls' anger at their father and grief for their mother for his own ends. Based on the fairy tale of the twelve dancing princesses, Entwined expands its source material to a look at love and grief and the understanding required for both.

Alloy of Law Wax & Wayne Mistborn 01

This follow up to the Mistborn trilogy takes place in the same world but centuries later and has something of a wild west feel. Sanderson is able to make his magic system new again while still staying completely consistent within his world. This is a fun read with lots of mystery and adventure that still manages to ask philosophical questions.

If you like romantic manga, this is one for you. Aimed at teens and with art that does a good job of conveying emotion, this story focuses on a young girl whose brother passed away, leaving her with a cellphone that connected her to a man called Daisy. Daisy listens to all of her problems and gives her constant support, but when she lies to Daisy about being bullied, he decides to take a more active but secret role in her life.

This retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses looks at the fairy tale from a completely different angle. This story is about loss and grieving and the way a family can pull apart or pull together when dealing with the death of a loved one. It is also about how different people deal with grief and how those ways can be at odds with what other people think are correct. It is also about how different people love and how they express that love. This book has depth that goes beyond the fairy tale. It manages to be both extremely entertaining and thoughtful.

This book kept me emotionally engaged for the entire ride, which is quite an accomplishment considering its length. I can't wait for the second book.
