I thoroughly enjoyed Selznick's previous work "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" and wondered if this book could be as good. I was delighted to love this book even more. The pictures and story are parallels in different times, leading to a common place, but taking their own path and time to come together. I loved how the words and images were at odds and yet complement each other in interesting ways. I found his characters compelling and real. It is a quick read, and thoroughly enjoyable. I can't wait to share it with my children.

Continuing in the spirit of the first book, this book is a gripping tale. The characters are engaging and the world is fascinating. However, minor inconsistencies throughout were irritating and tended to make it a less satisfying read than the first book. I would recommend this series to a friend, but not to someone that isn't already a fan of fantasy.
