Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Blood Meridian

Rather early in this novel two things are clear. First, it is one of the most beautifully written books ever written. Second, as others have noted, it is quite violent and brutal. The depravity of the characters seems to have no end, yet the sheer magnitude of the writing also seems to have no end.

Lord of the Flies

If you, unlike me, happened to live in a time, or grow up in school district, or had that one really good teacher/ mentor and read this book as required reading, you probably already know how good it is. And it is good in every way a book can be good. You also already know how essential it is. It tells truths in ways only fiction can. But, if you were unlucky enough to miss this book as a littlun as I did, you must start reading it today. And actually, if you have read it, you should probably read it again.

In the City of Shy Hunters
by
Tom Spanbauer
Michael Moy
, April 02, 2010
After continually hearing Chuck Palahniuk lavish praise upon Tom Spanbauer I finally got around to reading this book. To say the praise is "well deserved" is a monumental understatement. The characters, while outrageous, are entirely believable. There is a gigantic sense of time and place. And, the writing itself is mesmerizing. All you really need to know is that you should (need to) read it.

Crow Road

If you like to be challenged as a reader this is the book for you. The writing is superb although perhaps a touch difficult to navigate for those of us on this side of the pond. The story unfolds mainly through extensive character studies and flashback. It all comes at you in glimpses and teases you to keep on reading. In this way it won't be for everyone, but if you stick with it for a few chapters the morsels become a meal.

Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates

Tom Robbins

Religion, the Amazon, marketing, sex, witch-doctors, meditation and a Matisse "Blue Nude" put into the blender that is Tom Robbins and what you get is a cocktail so delicious and potent you can't help going back for more.

Jitterbug Perfume

This was the first time I read Tom Robbins, I had been considering reading this book for a while and now wonder why I waited. Not only is this a great story filled with great characters, it makes one consider life and how one lives it. But most importantly Robbins' command of the English language is breathtaking.

Snuff

Chuck Palahniuk
Michael Moy
, June 04, 2008
As with all of Palahniuk's novels, he again deals with broken people here. This time though, its through the lens of the porn industry. Which is absolutely brilliant. This is one of his finest novels yet which IS saying a lot. As the story progresses we are dealt tragedy and hilarity, often at the same time. All the while aspects of American life such as sex, celebrity, obsession, and biggest of all, the family unit are scrutinized.

Crooked Little Vein
by
Warren Ellis
Michael Moy
, January 23, 2008
This book is in fact hilarious so long as you find perverse, strange and perhaps even disguting acts of sex and the people who perform them to be funny. But that's not all. There is an underlying theme of government's desire for ultimate power, and how one might fight against it. And If none of that interests you, you'll never look at Godzilla the same way again.
