War of Witches A JourneyiInto the Underworld of the Contemporary Aztecs
by
Timothy J Knab
Vicki
, November 08, 2007
Just in time for el Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is this riveting travelogue by anthropologist Timothy J. Knab. In this book, Knab recounts his experiences studying native fold medicine among the "curanderos" (healers) of the Aztec indians of Mexico. During the course of his field research and apprenticeship to an Aztec curandero, Knab inadvertently stumbles upon the history of a "war" amongst the "witches" of contemporary Aztec society. This is an exciting real-life mystery, filled with ethnographic detail about ancient Aztec beliefs and practices that were thought to have been wiped out by the Spanish conquest and the spread of Catholocism. Highly recommended!

If you aren't sure what the big deal about knitting is, here is a book that will induct you into the infectious obsession with sticks and string that is sweeping the nation. Entertaining and informative!

Anne of Green Gables Storybook Based on the Kevin Sullivan Film of Lucy Maud Montgomerys Classic Novel
by
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Vicki
, July 10, 2007
Fans of the television series "Anne of Green Gables" will enjoy this picture book based on the original Canadian miniseries, which will air again on PBS this year through 2008. In picture book format, this book is a nice introduction to the L. M. Montgomery series of books for children ages 9 to 12, and is also an enjoyable souvenir for older "children" who remember the television series with fondness.

Chasing Kangaroos
by
Tim Flannery
Vicki
, July 10, 2007
Both memoir and travelogue, this book recounts the author's journey to Australia, his fascination with kangaroos and his quest to discover their origins through study of the fossil record, and the folkways of Australia's aborigines. Best known for his book The Weather Makers, about global warming, Flannery effectively combines engaging descriptions of his travels with passion for the science and geology of prehistoric Australia. Highly recommended!

Barbaro
by
Sean Clancy
Vicki
, May 21, 2007
On Preakness Day 2007, Michael Matz, Barbaro's trainer, wiped tears from his eyes as another horse he had trained, Chelokee, won the newly-renamed Barbaro Stakes race. This long-awaited book by Sean Clancy traces the exciting history of thoroughbred racehorse Barbaro: from his stunning Kentucky Derby win in 2006, to his tragic injury at the Pimlico Race Course last year, and his subsequent death, which broke the hearts of millions of his fans and well-wishers.

The Geography of the Imagination: Forty Essays
by
Guy Davenport
Vicki
, May 18, 2007
Like the English professor who mesmerizes students by teasing connections between odd details of literature, history and personal experience in the classroom, Guy Davenport transports the readers of his essays to experience the wonders of literature. Not a tedious collection of scholarly essays, no -- this collection is a box of finely crafted petit fours, to be enjoyed at leisure, and often. From the surprising origins of Hobbits, to several tributes to poets he admired, this collection of critical essays by essayist, professor, poet, translator, painter and writer of short stories Guy Davenport reminds this reader of many pleasant years passed in obtaining a liberal arts education, savoring as well as studying literature, and remembering why it was all so worth it.

Stephanie Pearl McPhee Casts Off The Yarn Harlots Guide to the Land of Knitting
by
Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
Vicki
, May 16, 2007
Like all of Ms. Pearl-McPhee's books, this is a hoot. Knitters and the non-knitters who love them will enjoy all of her witty comments about the neurotic habits of knitters. This particular book is arranged like a travel book, a sort of Lonely Planet guide to all the knitting places you'll go. Entertaining!

This is the most recent volume in the Philosophy of Popular Culture series, a series of books that examines connections between traditional philosophical themes and the world of popular culture. This is a collection of essays by a variety of authors, divided into three main sections which examine the films of Martin Scorses in light of the philosophical themes of authenticity -flourishing - the good life, rationality - criminality - emotions, and vision - salvation - the transcendental.
