Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Real Fast Food 350 Recipes Ready To Eat in 30 Minutes
by
Nigel Slater

If you're tired after work or constatly pressed for time but you enjoy good food buy Nigel Slater's book. His recipes are simple and wonderful and you hardly need any cooking experience to achieve good results. Even if these recipes take a little more time to prepare than 30 minutes (it's usually closer to 45 minutes) they're still worth trying. Recipes are divided into particular ingredients which makes it all the easier to use this book. Recipes are followed by 10 or more other ideas you can put to practice using a particular ingredient. What I also find invaluable is the section dedicated to what ingredients you should always keep handy in your cupboard to be able to prepare a simple dish after a hectic day at work. His wonderful recipes include delicious chicken with oranges and black olives (ready in exactly 30 minutes), pasta with olive oil and fresh thyme (simple, fast and yet wonderfu) and new potato saute with walnut oil.

Cooking Of South West France
by
Paula Wolfert

, June 13, 2007
If you like just reading cookery books buy this book and enjoy Paula Wolfert's wonderful writing style that evokes the atmosphere and flavours of South-west France. If you consider cooking from this book think twice. Although the recipes are worth trying (more on that below) they are complicated and time consuming. Just the look on a given recipe running on two pages can put you off. Although the recipes are very detailed you need to be an experienced cook to achieve good results. Paula Wolfert's brioche is wonderful but the dough must rise for upwards of 20 hours. Her recipes for duck confits, cassoulets and pates as well as traditional desserts are wonderful but again you need time and experience. The simplest as well as delicious are her vegetable recipes including potato cake with leeks so if you hesitate to buy this book you can do it just for them.

Walnut Cookbook
by
Jean Luc Toussaint

If you love walnuts this book is a must for you. It contains more than 100 recipes including not only sweet treats but also savoury dishes. In this book you can find classics like walnut tart but also surpising and yet wonderful combinations like walnut tapenade or walnut and horseradish sauce (delicious with fish). If you're lucky enough to have your own walnut trees you can try recipes for a green walnut liqueur (a superb digestive) or even walnut leaf wine. So far I've also tried fig and walnut jam (wonderful with your toast) and gnocchi with ham and walnuts, both recipes superb. This book shows that walnuts are not only addition to sweet tarts but are also much more versitile than I've ever imagined. Buy this book and enjoy splendid dishes.
