Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Hello Cupcake

I purchased "Hello Cupcake!" at the request of my nieces (age 13 and 10). They have become quite the cooks of late and are particularly fond of baked goods. The feedback I have had from them indicates that this was an excellent choice. The illustrations are superb and the recipies are easy to follow. The result has been great looking and tasting treats. They especially like the fact that these cupcake recipies to not require a lot of specialized equipment or exotic ingredients. As my youngest niece says "It's AWESOME!" (her highest and loudest praise). It seems I found a winner for them.

Neverwhere
by
Neil Gaiman

"Neverwhere" is the first, and still a favorite, Niel Gaiman effort I ever experienced. I encountered it many years ago as an audio book. I purchased it at a truck stop in Winnemucca, Nevada out of sheer desparation when facing a long drive north on US 95--one of the most desolate and boring roads in America. I knew nothing about the author and was delighted with his dark and gothic alternative underground London. The miles flew by and I found myself listening to it (and reading the novel) again and again over the years. Yes it owes alot to standard fantasy fiction (clueless hero finds his way in a strange world, meets many colorful characters, discovers his inner strength, defeats a monster, foils an evil plot, and saves the damsel who he has fallen in love with). So what! This is fantasy not War and Peace, and Gaiman puts a very enjoyable spin on these standard elements. Years later I find the world he created and the characters still fresh and engaging--so much so that I just bought a copy as a gift for my 13 year old fantasy junkie niece.
