Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I had it in me, just didn't realize I could use it verbally to get what I want and need in life. The stories inside of us are the keys! If you are ever want to sell something, tell a story. It's that simple...........duh. You won't believe how this book will open up opportunities and satisfactions.

Water for Elephants

In the past year I have read three books that will stay on the shelves of my mind forever. "Water for Elephants" is one of the three. Knowing that this is set in the time of my Grandparent's young adult lives and my Mother's young life, during the depression, I can almost see them at one of these performances. See them with the "Awhs" and "O's" on their faces. You get to know the stories behind the big top. The intimate, sorrowful, sick and pathetic lives of the people and animals it takes to put that big tent up for your enjoyment and hopefully another meal for them. I want this book in my library for as long as I live to read again and again when I need a visit.

Forgotten Garden

I adored this book and could barely put it down. A new Australian author has opened a new world to me and I can only hope she doesn't stop writing. If you love multi-generational sagas full of mysteries and secrets that mold people and the lives they live, you will love this. There were so many wonderfully worded passages from the past that I wanted to remember. The past melding with the current, back and forth! What a read! I felt I was on a lyrical roller coaster!

Clan Of The Cave Bear

I read this book the first time in the 80's. Waited impatiently for the follow up book, then again and again. There are five books in the Earth Children Series so far and I'm always hoping for another. I have read these books at least twice and I see the third coming. You open The Clan of the Cave Bear and enter the world of our making. You join a girl child, alone, and she carries you with her through four more books, as she grows up. You learn, in a way better way than school teaches, how our tools, weapons, clothes, food, seasonings and medicines came about. How they were improved over time. Relationships, prejudices, love, hate and amazing scenery. All of which is based on actual history and studies of the ice age on earth. These books live within me and have helped me in actual life. Just be prepared to want the whole series and have the next book waiting after the last page of the previous.

These books are amazing. The graphics are like having a teacher right with you. Especially good if you are one that needs a show and tell type of learning.
