So Sad to Fall in Battle An Account of War Based on General Tadamichi Kuribayashis Letters from Iwo Jima

I read an average of 80 plus books a year. It is a pretty even split between fiction and non-fiction. The subject matter I read ranges from military history to world history to the history of science and scientific discovery. I read biographies, autobiographies and books on topics from aviation to zoology. My wife says I am the only person she knows that reads textbooks for fun. My fiction taste runs mostly to science fiction and I have read everyone from Asimov to Zelazny at one time or another. I will admit to a weakness for feline and culinary mysteries. Since retiring 5 years ago, I have gone back and re-read classic books and authors that I first encountered 50 or more years ago, but of late I have been devouring Laurie R. King books. Of the 800 - 900 books I have read in the last 10 years the book that most stands out for me is "So Sad to Fall in Battle". This is the story, told through letters home, of the Japanese general charged with defending the island of Iwo Jima from the American invasion. He knew that he could not win the battle. He knew that he, and his troops, were all going to die in a lost cause. Yet, he did the best he could for Japan and the Empire. A profoundly moving story of courage and commiment in the face of insurmountable odds.
