Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

It usually takes me anywhere from 2 to 3 chapters to decide whether I'm going to commit time to a new book. However, this book "got me" by page 10! While there are many post-apocalyptic books around these days, most of them depict a USA gone so wrong that it is unrecognizable. This book, though, portrays an LA that has descended into chaos and a wilderness existence that could truly happen for those who want to escape the havoc. It is a future that is all too possible and, therefore, simultaneously frightening and mesmerizing. The books title evokes both the setting and the main character, a post earthquake California gone awry and a main character, Calvin, sometimes called a derogatory California by his old college mates, who, with is wife show us what people are willing to do to maintain a sense of safety in an uncertain time. It's interesting to watch these characters as they adjust to their new surroundings and accommodate themselves to a new reality. I hope their will be an equally satisfying sequel as I want to know more about these people.

This is a pre-order review, so no rating YET: I love Powell's though I haven't ordered in a long time. The flat rate shipping and free shipping over $50 will help get me back. Also, I love Colbert. I love Amazon....except the company is getting too pushy when it hurts authors, especially new authors. So, here's to the Colbert bump. I'm hoping to love the book. It sounds very interesting. I also hope I can edit this review after the book arrives and I've finished reading it. Thanks Powell's for being part of this! Thanks Colbert! Thanks Alexie!
