Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Youth in Revolt
by
C.D. Payne

I first read this book when I was in High School and it was like reading Catcher in the Rye for a newer, more cynical generation. Even as the story gets more and more absurd, Payne never loses sight of the character of Nick Twisp and his crazy antics to win over a girl. This is a truly great book.

Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
by
Michael Chabon

This is my all time favorite book. Chabon paints a vivid and unparalleled world of comics and life in the early part of last century. It depicts humanity at its best and worst, in its beauty and ugliness alike. Just a beautifully written book and a wonderful engaging story. One of those books that changed my life. Best of the decade.

Chasing Harry Winston
by
Lauren Weisberger

, April 19, 2008
I usually shy away from this kind of book, but Chasing Harry Winston is not, as the name suggests, about women eager to get married to rich men. It is, instead, about women finding themselves and relishing in their friendships. A kind of Sex and the City for the late twenty/early thirty year old crowd, the trio of female friends in Weisberger's book are a fantastic addition to the canon of the single girl in the city. Not only are these three women struggling against what is expected of them, but they are also struggling to find themselves; a task that seems to be coming around later and later these days. It is fun but does not assume that the reader is a moron. It has the tropes of all the recent Candace Bushnell knock-offs, but none of the condescending treatment of women as nothing more than vapid, money hungry cougars in designer clothes. A fantastic summer read.
