A Simple Soul
by
Vadim Babenko
leslie obrien
, November 22, 2013
This is the second book by Vadim Babenko that I’ve read and I’m hooked. His storytelling is engaging and his characters, jaded Muscovites who are growing increasingly indifferent to the old regime as they embrace the modern world, are as interesting as they are peculiar. Admittedly, were I to own his books in hardback (instead of epub), I could, in a pinch, use them to shore up the side of a building. However, don’t let the seemingly overwhelming size of his novels detract you, “A Simple Soul” is an interesting story but like his others, it is not a quick read. This story is slow moving. The characters are introduced unhurriedly and their many quirks are drawn out and intertwined in a seemingly endless portrayal of humanity in all its ugliness and beauty. It is as engaging as it is tragic. And as tragic as it is hopeful. Definitely worth reading.

Prepper Supplies & Survival Guide: The Prepping Supplies, Gear & Food You Must Have to Survive
by
Novato Press
leslie obrien
, November 22, 2013
Let’s be honest, how many of are ready for a disaster? Ok, maybe we have car emergency kits that we picked up at the sporting goods store or someone gave us, but do we know what’s in it? What about at home? First aid kit? Emergency supplies? What about our pets? Do we even know what we should buy? While many companies offer various emergency supply packs, some at ridiculous prices, they are not all created equal. The “Prepper Supplies and Survival Guide” is your one-stop resource on what to have on hand in the event of a disaster. The table of contents is broken up into broad sections (prep basics, water, food, shelter, first aid, power, sanitation, pets) and comprises breakdowns of the types of things to expect in an emergency situation (loss of utilities, water, unable to leave location) and provides lists of what to have on hand. And while you can buy the kits suggested, Novato Press also provides a breakdown of the contents so you can pull together your own safety kits. This easy to read and follow guide will help you keep your family safe during unplanned emergencies.

Semmant
by
Vadim Babenko
leslie obrien
, November 15, 2013
When we meet Bogdan Bogdanov, we know that he’s in some sort of a hospital. We later learn that he’s a cybernetics genius with an interesting past. Well, that’s putting it too simply. Bogdan spends his early childhood in constant motion. Not by his own choice. His father, a bit of a shyster seems to wear out his welcome and the family is forced to move. A lot. As voyeurs, we bear witness to Bogdan as he grows and moves from job to job. Always looking. Always seeking. What? Something even he can’t always answer. Eventually, he creates Semmant, a robot living inside a computer, who makes money with the efficiency of, well, a machine. Told in flashback, this isn’t only a story of the rise and fall of a man, it’s a love story immortalized in the heart of a machine. Where precision and rules blend with the chaos that is human emotions. Definitely a book for the long winter, this isn’t a simple read. What I had thought would be a “vacation” novel that I could pick up/put down at will, drew me in to late nights of much page turning followed by lucid dreaming. Pandora’s box in the body of a machine, we are witness to all that is tragedy, but brought together in hope. Highly recommended. Your existential friends will have something new to talk about.

The Dash Diet Health Plan: Low-Sodium, Low-Fat Recipes to Promote Weight Loss, Lower Blood Pressure, and Help Prevent Diabetes
by
Rockridge Press
leslie obrien
, November 07, 2013
Living with two individuals who are both diabetic and have been battling high blood pressure since they were both in their late 30s (they are now in their 50s and 80s respectively), it can be difficult to find nutritional meals that don’t scream, I have medical problems. When I came across The DASH Diet Cookbook, I picked up a copy on a whim and I’m glad I did because this program will also be helpful to me in reducing my sodium. Approved by the American Heart Association and used as the basis for the new food pyramid (er, plate), you'll find the caloric charts helpful in varying serving sizes. While this book and program is much more than a cookbook, the recipes are easy to shop for and follow for those who don't cook much. More importantly, there’s plenty of sweet options to appease all the sweet tooth’s in the house.

Holy Sh*t: A Brief History of Swearing
by
Melissa Mohr
leslie obrien
, May 13, 2013
As someone who feels that Americans (I am one too) are really quite prudish when it comes to swearing, this was an interesting read across time and place. Ranging from, swearing is the be all end all, OMG, I can't believe you just said that, my ears are bleeding to the oh wow, nicely expressed to everything in between, Mohr shows us the evolution of profanity from the religious to the obscene. It's a good read. Honest. Pick up a copy for your favorite profane one or perhaps someone who could use a bit of an expansion of his/her vocabulary.

Vertical Vegetables Creative Gardening Techniques for Growing Food Up in Small Spaces
by
Rhonda Massingham Hart
leslie obrien
, July 26, 2012
Both creative and useful, "Vertical Vegetables and Fruit" has become one of three books I turn to regularly while plotting and planting my garden. I've learned that I put far too much soil around many of my plants that much prefer the freedom to climb. I've also found new uses for old items I've been reluctant to clog the landfill with. I look forward to continuing to grow vertical as I search my home and garage sales for unique ideas to keep my garden interesting.

Dead Reckoning Southern Vampire 11
by
Charlaine Harris
leslie obrien
, September 01, 2011
The Sookie Stackhouse books are fun to read. Told from first person perspective, I sometimes feel like I'm missing important information that comes from an omniscient narrator, but once I got used to her point of view, I found I enjoyed the series. The latest in the southern vampire series, Harris gives us a snapshot of life in Bon Temps and what it's like interacting with the supernatural AND humans. What makes these so enjoyable is that relationship problems exist no matter human, shifter or vampire. Oh what a relief to know that others have the same problems we do.

P.S. Your Cat Is Dead
by
James Kirkwood
leslie obrien
, September 01, 2011
Just when you thought your life couldn't be any worse, your girl friend leaves you, someone breaks into your apartment and oh yea, your cat is dead. Hysterically funny and sometimes incredibly painful to read, Kirkwood weaves a great tale of a man down on his luck (and that's putting it mildly). This book was given to me as a gift and I read it without putting it down. I now buy copies as gifts and leave out when guests come to visit.

Buddhas Brain The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness
by
Rick Hanson, Richard Mendius
leslie obrien
, September 29, 2010
I readily admit that I will roll my eyes at many things I lump into the category of "new age". And when I read about programs that claim to achieve happiness through meditation, the eyes do start rolling. Perhaps it is because many of these books appeal only to one side of the brain and I am not THAT right-brained. Buddha's Brain uses science to show how meditation can make a difference. The science aspect helped make it click and I found myself more open to the concepts presented in the book. This book is ideal for those who have been told they need to relax, reduce stress, maybe try meditation, but like me, scoff at wispy music and quickly find ourselves snoozing instead of meditating. The science made it conceivable for me.

Art of Non Conformity Set Your Own Rules Live the Life You Want & Change the World
by
Chris Guillebeau
leslie obrien
, September 07, 2010
I'm not seeking world domination. In fact, some days simply getting out of bed proves too difficult. But as Guillebeau says, "You don’t have to live your life the way other people expect you to." And once that truly sinks in, learning to live the life you want, even if in baby steps, is possible. Now this isn't a bible and don't expect to be preached to, because you won't. So if you aren't ready for change, hold off on buying this book. But if you have even the slightest tingle of the desire for change, by all means, read this book. Quickly.

Come Hell Or High Water
by
Michele Bardsley
leslie obrien
, June 10, 2010
I've discovered a fond appreciation for vampire- paranormal- romance- with lots of butt kicking action type books and this one fits the list. It was enjoyable and I laughed aloud at some of the cultural references. However, some of those references might date the book. Overall, it's a fun read on a warm lazy day or in between anything heavy and stressful. My only criticism are the number of typos. As a Signet publication, I expected better copy editing.

Soul Magic
by
Jennifer Lyon
leslie obrien
, June 07, 2010
This is my first time reading a story by Jennifer Lyon and I enjoyed the story. She took the time to build her characters and I couldn't help but chuckle at Sutton's discomfort at learning how to deal with and respond to Carla's mom, Chandra. This book is a sci/fi-romance-story about relationships and the trials and tribulations everyone faces when the heart is central. My two criticisms are that while the build to the climax was good, Lyon took too long to get to the final action scene. And the final scene ends too abruptly, I actually checked the book to see if any pages were missing.

Flirt Anita Blake 18
by
Laurell K Hamilton
leslie obrien
, May 01, 2010
I picked up a copy of this book because it was next in line for the Anita Blake series. I was surprised at its brevity, but really pleased with it. It's a great story that delves into Anita Blake's necromancy and well, it's about flirting and all the different directions it can take. What's really terrific are the essay and comics at the end. Hamilton warns of a spoiler alert in her introduction and I behaved and waited until I finished reading the story before reading the background material at the end. But for would be writers and lovers of fiction, when you are dying (pun intended) to ask an author about his/her method for coming up with plot lines and/or development of a story, look no further than Hamilton's Flirt. Not only is your answer packed into a nifty little story, but the author's thinking and the events that occurred to bring this story to fruition are laid out there for you. It's a great story with a creative writing lesson included with the cost of the book.

I love these genres of books. In times of intense economic stress and frustration, I giggle (no really, I do) and chuckle as I read these stories. And Acheron was long-awaited for me. I forked over the dough for a hardback and simply sucked it try (yes, a bad pun). But if you are looking for a mini vacation from the day2day and want to giggle yourself chuckled, enjoy. Believe me, dark hunters CAN be comical.

My husband calls these vampire bodice rippers. I love them for their ability to whisk me away from the present into the world of the supernatural. Anita Blake, vampire executioner, member of not one, but two triumvirates, and girlfriend to one hot Master of the City - she's a woman making it in a man's world and she's right in the middle of all the power, sex, mystery, sex, violence, intrigue, sex, politics, and did I mention the sex? Hamilton brings us another great volume in the Blake series that I just couldn't put down. If you enjoy her books or are looking for an escape, order your copy today.
