This book is so right on about the whole first kiss thing, feeling fat thing, awkward teen chic thing. Although it takes place in a mental hospital, it's not too scary, but it does give you a taste of all the types of people and types of problems that bring teens to a place like a mental hospital. Told in letters to a friend, this is a very well-written story about one Ramone-lovin' "chubby" teen who stops going to school and gets sent to a mental hospital as a result. All of the group sessions, roommate banter, and field trip with cute guy near the end affirm the universal themes of parent-child tension that is so common among teens and Ramone-awesomeness in music and fashion that is timeless. Don't buy this book for the cover; buy it because this author is right on and honest at describing her three weeks at "Lake Shit" mental hospital, and the cute boy/interesting friends she meets there.

Farm Chicks in the Kitchen Live Well Laugh Often Cook Much

This cookbook will never leave your kitchen if you are anything like me. I just keep trying new recipes, and they are always a hit. The apple pie recipe is the best I've ever made. The hint involved with the way you cut your apples is amazing. The pie crust recipe is flaky and buttery and just right. The camp bars are such a success with my picky toddler that I have to hide the rest because I can't keep him out of the refrigerator. Other breakfast successes have been the coffee cake and the old-fashioned apple pancake. I also made the cucumber cups, and holy cow. They were a major hit. I then made another appetizer that involved cheese on toasted bread, and I made it the night before like they said; it was all a cinch to get ready the day of. Needless to say my Thanksgiving menu has been forever changed by the farm chicks cookbook. Now for the best part. . . these two ladies have interspersed amazing craft ideas for your kitchen and home in between the recipes. Their concept is "fifth avenue meets the junkyard" or in other words "shabby chic" but they take it to a whole new level with the subtleties of their style like rick rack on the edge of your shelving, oil cloth table covers, mini pies as gifts, and tv tray magnet boards. The last part of this cookbook that has made it an instant favorite with me are the personal essays about their friends who inspired the recipes. These women are totally awesome, and this cookbook is the best gift ever for anyone crafty AND cook-a-licious!!!!

This Lullaby

Sarah Dessen

Some of the best parts in this awesome novel by Sarah Dessen are really small moments in time when you can just suck in your breath and really be there if you close your eyes: like when Remy and her girl friends are on the trampoline and when one of them moves or laughs, it ripples through the other girls, or when Remy throws a super-size zip coke (diet coke) whirling end over end through the air in slow motion until it lands kersplat on the hood of jerko's car. I could go on and on. Anyone who is type A will get Remy, and for the rest of us who don't know what that is, just buy it for a teen or college girl in your life: she'll love it!
