Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Young Miles

Somehow I had missed the Vorkosigan books by Bujold, and I corrected my gross error in one protacted bout of book gluttony, devouring every book in the series over the course of a couple of weeks. I do believe that I will now turn around and start them all over again. I want to be Miles Vorkosigan when I grow up - or well, perhaps I'd rather be his best friend (despite the likelihood of being drafted into mad schemes of all description) - being Miles sounds like one exhausting roller coaster ride! If you like adventure, excitement, battles, intrigue, spies, spaceships, space warfare, semi-alien but human culture studies, strong female characters, strong male characters, likeable characters, impeccably despicable characters, characters you love to hate, characters you love to love ... these are the books for you. Read them all. Do it now.

Day of the Triffids

I read this knowing that it's on everyone's recommended reading list for great classic sci-fi, knowing I should read it, but I didn't really expect to like it. I got sucked into the plot and spat out again on the other side, looking at my garden in a very suspicious fashion. Some of the science and sociology seems a little naive, but the characterization is absorbing and the burning desire to find out "what happens next??" was more than enough to get me hooked.
