Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Lost Prince of Samavia
by
Frances Hodgson Burnett
Babs
, October 23, 2013
Even though this book is not as tightly written, this is my favorite of Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's stories. As in her other tales, the hero - with the help of companions - must overcome a major difficulty. In this case the true prince of the Samavia must be restored to his rightful position. When Marco and his friend "The Rat" are tasked with carrying a coded message to unassuming people throughout Europe, they only know that they are helping Marco's beloved Samavia.

Adam of the Road
by
Gray, Elizabeth Janet
Babs
, August 07, 2012
This Newberry classic is meant for younger readers than Robert Louis Stevenson’s Black Arrow. Set at the end of the 13th century in King Edward’s England, this story involves a minstrel boy who in seeking his lost dog also loses his father. As he travels around the country side surrounding London the reader gains a picture of life for the various levels of society in the Middle Ages. The differences in the ethical viewpoints of the characters add an interesting dimension to the tale. As Adam desperately attempts to find his father who believes that “the road” is a holy thing that must be respected and repaired and who sings and tells tales with a moral purpose, he encounters other minstrels who rely on rowdy stories and stealing to make their days survivable.
