The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1)

Don't let the YA category turn you off - I found this book to be just as entertaining as many "adult" novels I've read (maybe more so in some cases.) This book, as well as the entire series, definitely makes my Top 10 list. Basically it's about these fifteen-year-old twins - Josh and Sophie - who stumble into this epic adventure, jumping from place to place and time to time, in order to save humankind. Oh, and their guide is Nicholas Flamel (a real person in history) and they may or may not be the Twins of Legend. Michael Scott does a wonderful job of making historical figures and events actually interesting, as well as intertwining them seamlessly with mythology from every part of the world. I can actually say that I learned more in this 6 book series than in any history or literature class. Admittedly, the cast of characters can be somewhat overwhelming, but Mr. Scott has created an easily-navigated website of who, what, where and when. I read the first 5 books in about a week, then had to wait 6 months for the 6th to come out...I'm now in the process of re-reading them all again!

Girl On Legare Street

I really liked everything about this book. It had it all - romance, suspense, ghosts...It's the 2nd in the series and, in my opinion, you really need to read "The House on Tradd Street" first to make it all work. The heroine can be a bit obnoxious at times, but she's very realistic, and hey, I think all of us have a little obnoxious in us! I'm extremely anxious for the 3rd book to come out, but I have a long wait - according to Kate White's website, it's not slated to be released until later this year (2011!) or possibly even next year :-(
