Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I loved this book as it starts out in DC, my hometown. I felt like I was right there with him. He has the same feelings I have about tourists and the local people. I appreciate the locals and their customs too when I travel. Will read more by this author. Very funny guy.

This was a very heavy read. I was somewhat speechless at the 3/4 mark and had to put it down, finishing it later. However, very few contemporary writers have put so precisely into words, the feelings , the helpless nature of living as a black person in the US. Helpless only as one cannot escape appearance which, let's face it, is deemed somewhat worth less and totally expendable in the US of A.

Negroland: A Memoir

What I enjoyed mostly was the middle third of the book. This talked about her childhood, dealing with the private school days and the non diverse school environment. I thought she handled most situations well as she had no one to mentor her at that time.

Beautiful Place to Die

Loved this book about oppression, murder and relationships. I hope you get a chance to read it, if you are at all curious about South Africa in the pre-apartheid era. I have read mostly nonfiction about the era and seen a couple of movies regarding the issue. This book explains it all in very everyday terms. If you are this you live this way, if you are that then you live another way. The characters were very well written and you are drawn into the story to see who is the culprit. The ending is tragic, but justified. My only thought is that so many innocent people were mistreated horribly due to their "apparent" race.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read. The stories were believable. I did love the way most of his stories had a surprise ending. This book is well worth your time. I recommend it highly for those who love short stories and for everyone. I must say that I will probably read more of this author's work!!!

Shifu Youll Do Anything for a Laugh

The book starts out with a bang for me. It was humorous with lots of twists. I liked the first two stories. Suddenly the stories become dark and eerie. Like Grimm's folk tales you are a little creeped out. I will say I was surprised that people in China were actually dying of starvation. You don't really understand until you read about it or hear a story. I did not know that infanticide was such a wide spread practice there. The world can be a brutal place if born in precarious circumstances. I enjoyed reading about this culture ,the bad and the good.

This is a great book for neophytes and old timers. The author has a great sense of self and is humble. If you consider yourself naive, or have been in a sheltered situation, this is the book for you. Learn about the hard knocks of life and how to handle them. You will not be sorry you read this.
