The tragedy of the novel is the innocence of Maggie which can be established by death. This can be proved with the myth used to hint the death of Maggie. "The trial of Hetty, wherein an old lady has to die to prove that she is pure. The ordeal deals with a very unfair choice which says that if the lady swims, she is a witch and if she drowns, she is innocent. In either of the cases the battle is lost and she has to die." This can be linked to Maggie as she also has to die to prove her chastity after returning from the elopement with Stephen. In other words, she is compared to the witch who when noticed, becomes exiled.

Maggie is born and died as a victim of chance.
