Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Freedom Just Around The Corner
by
Walter A Mcdougall
Jeff Michels
, January 02, 2010
This may be the best general history of the U.S. yet written. Mcdougall doesn't take a liberal, conservative, new, revisionist or fundamentalist slant on American history, but he cites sources from all of those schools of thought and more - when they merit citation. Through this he tells a more complete and useful story than any previous historian. His fundamental thesis, that America thrives because it allows the hustler (in all fields, religion, politics, education, business, etc.) not only to exist but to thrive, is well supported and offers a fundamentally useful view of history to the modern reader. The citations themselves offer a roadmap for a graduate course in American histoy, while at the same time the book remains an entertaining and absorbing read.
