Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Arcadia
by
Groff, Lauren

, January 06, 2013
I am a sucker for anything examining counterculture and would-be utopian communities, so Lauren Goff's Arcadia is right up my alley. What a world she creates, full of complex emotions and relationships that can never live up to the heady aspirations its members share--and the lifelong effect this environment has on a boy who grew up observing it all.

A Visit from the Goon Squad
by
Jennifer Egan
LDP
, August 04, 2012
I was hesitant to read A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD because I wasn't crazy about Jennifer Egan's earlier novel, LOOK AT ME. I'm glad I gave Egan a second chance, though, because I thoroughly enjoyed her delving into different aspects of the music industry, while simultaneously revealing truths about time. Who we think we will be when we are young is rarely who we become. Using a narrative structure that jumps back and forth in time, Egan skillfully unveils key aspects of characters' stories, like a painter filling in a complex composition. Entertaining and satisfying.

Cheese Monkeys A Novel In Two Semesters
by
Chip Kidd
LDP
, August 04, 2012
Chip Kidd's clever send-up of college art departments and graphic design is a hoot. As the novel's plot progresses, Kidd, whose day job is in graphic design, nudges readers to think about how design works, even as he entertains them with bigger-than-life characters. Big fun, especially for those who have gone to art school!

Poser My Life in Twenty Three Yoga Poses
by
Claire Dederer
LDP
, January 03, 2012
Less about yoga and more about trying to make sense of life, Poser offers Claire Dederer's wry observations about family and the struggles of the self. The author uses self-deprecating humor as she opens her personal history to explain how she reached this moment of being a not-young young mother and stressed-out writer, and why yoga lures her with its promise of calming her angst-y soul. A funny and poignant memoir, Dederer's Poser strings together words in beautifully unexpected ways.

Poser My Life in Twenty Three Yoga Poses
by
Claire Dederer
LDP
, September 01, 2011
I am not a yoga-phile, but despite the title of Poser, that doesn't change how enjoyable, poignant and funny it is! Claire Dederer's memoir captures the zeitgeist of what it's like to be a new mom of a certain age in Seattle. But even that doesn't convey the essence of this book, which is a wonderfully written and self-effacing story of one woman's struggle to make peace with ALL the parts of her life. Truly an enjoyable read!

Publish and Perish: Three Tales of Tenure and Terror
by
James Ma Hynes
LDP
, November 21, 2009
A total hoot, especially for anyone who has slogged through graduate school or who spends his/her days in the ivory tower. James Hynes has created a triptych of short stories that poke fun at academic culture while scaring the bejesus out of readers. Great fun!
