Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Perfect Machine

A fascinating and readable history of the iconic Big Glass. This book tells of the visioning and creation of the Palomar observatory. The story of the casting and annealing of the mirror blank by Corning Glass is a gripping drama on it's own! Filled with history and little know tidbits. (Phillips Oil made a specialized product called Flying Horse Telescope Oil.) A good read for anyone interested in astronomy or history.

Grendel

So why is Grendel trashing Hrothgar's mead hall so regularly? Well, everyone has to have a hobby. But Beowulf has crashed the party and is set on spoiling all the fun. After reading the classic myth from Grendel's point of view, I'm not sure who's side I'd be on.

Microbe Hunters

This is a fascinating book. It's a history piece detailing the hunt for deadly germs, but also showing the unthinking racism and prejudices of the early twentieth century. Casually used racial slurs and stereotypes appear throughout the chapters. Comically, in final section, syphilus is never named. It is "the disease that is the reward of sin" and "the disease of the loathsome name". It was a very interesting read, and informative. However some parts required a thick skin.

Paddle to the Sea

I read Paddle in elementary school in the sixties. It was a wonderful surprise to see it recently reprinted. The story is a gentle and brilliant odyssey through the Lakes and through the clear colours of a child's eye. The description of the young native carver is not what it would be today, but is still insightful and told with respect.
