Magicians
by
Lev Grossman
jhor0107
, November 02, 2009
Take Harry Potter and Narnia and add sex, alcohol and depression and you get The Magicians. This book was good and I have to admit I couldn't put it down but it was mainly because I was hoping it would get better for the main character. If you like to relate to the characters in your book as I do this one probably isn't for you. The main character never really steps up to the plate and plays the part of a wuss most of the book. It was an OK book but could have used a different ending.

Judging Eye Aspect Emperor 01
by
R Scott Bakker
jhor0107
, March 30, 2009
The first book in the Aspect Emperor series is a great addition to the world Bakker created with his first series The Prince of Nothing. This book takes place 20 years after the end of the last book and focuses its attention on kelhus' kids and on Achaman as he struggles to find the origins of Kelhus. This book also introduces us to Mamira who has more to the story than previously thought. This book is really addictive and will not dissapoint readers of The Prince of Nothing series.

Sleuthing the Alamo: Davy Crockett's Last Stand and Other Mysteries of the Texas Revolution
by
James E. Crisp
jhor0107
, February 18, 2009
Crisp takes on a topic that many Americans and Texans believe they already know everything about and flips it totally around. Through extensive detective work Crisp gets to the bottom of how Davie Crockett died and explains, in detail, how he came to each conclusion and why the history books got it wrong. This is a great book for people that want to know the truth about the Texas revolution.

Warriors Dont Cry A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rocks Central High
by
Melba Pattillo Beals
jhor0107
, November 13, 2008
this book is surprised me because i started reading it thinking that i knew a lot about the little rock nine, but it has a totally new meaning hearing the first hand experience of those involved. I recommend this book even to those that have already studied about the civil rights movement. It is a must read for todays generation to understand what those before us had to endure so we could live, work and learn together.

It is an interesting read because even if you think you know how life was to the average peasant woman in medieval times this book will change your mind.

A Chinaman's Chance: The Chinese on the Rocky Mountain Mining Frontier
by
Liping Zhu
jhor0107
, October 18, 2008
Overall I liked this book. It shows the other side of american life for a Chinese immigrant in the Rocky Mountain mining frontier. The faults in this book are that all the information from the book was acquired from old court records and and other records from that time so it uses a lot of numbers and that gets kind of repetitive.

1066 The Year Of The Conquest
by
David Armin Howarth

Unless your really into English history or the history of warfare this is a hard read. It isn't that long so that makes it a little easier. All in all it does give you a pretty good handle on the events of 1066 as well as a feel for the life of peasants and how affected them.

Farewell to Manzanar A True Story of Japanese American Experience During & After the World War II Internment
by
Jeanne W Houston
jhor0107
, October 18, 2008
I had to read this book for a US history class and was surprised by how much I enjoyed learning about Japanese internment life. This book gives the insight into the life of Jeanne, a young Japanese American girl forced to live in Manzanar, an internment camp in the west. I loved learning about how life was and how it was affected even after the Japanese were released.

This prequel was pretty good but not all that I thought it would be. The story is pretty good but I don't think there is enough suspense.

This is the book that first really got me into reading. I read it in middle school and since then I've been hooked. I still remember wishing I was the main character and wondering how I would handle being lost in the woods.

Even for someone who doesn't believe in God this series is awesome. When I started these books I was not a believer but these books are so thrilling that you feel a part of the story. The way the books use prophecy in the book you just can't wait for things to unfold.

This whole series is great for young readers. The way the characters come to life and the descriptions of the battle scenes make you feel like your there. Though sometimes a little too lengthy with food descriptions, the book has great dialog and the way the author uses accents to separate character races and factions is fun to read.

The way this book is written it is easy to forget that the person you are rooting for is actually a german spy and should be the person you want to lose. This book will have you on the edge and is very difficult to put down

House of Leaves
by
Mark Z. Danielewski
jhor0107
, March 08, 2008
The multiple story lines and the odd way that this book is put together makes it hard to believe that it was written by Danielewski and not by the tatoo artist in the book. Its about a tattoo artist that finds a critique of a documentary of a house that is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. As the artist begins to piece the critique together he begins to doubt the world around him and goes crazy. Although difficult to read sometimes its worth it.

This book is great. The symbolism and foreshadowing is worked into the book just right so as not to be overwhelming. It is exciting and the 900 or so pages fly by before you know it. A great read. The kind of book that after reading it you just wanna pass it on so others can enjoy it.

This book is great as is the entire series. Not getting wrapped up in the story is impossible as the story continues to excite. Finding another series to read after this one is gonna be difficult.
