Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Invisible Bridge
by
Orringer, Julie
Stpaulgirl
, January 06, 2013
Orringer weaves a beautiful story of a family clinging to love and dignity in the face of unspeakable injustice. The rise of the Third Reich and the holocaust are the backdrop to a compelling story of loyalty and resilience. Orringer's talent as a fiction writer shines through in her ability to tell the story without lapsing into sentimentality. If you think you can't handle another novel about the holocaust, think again and give this one a try.

Great House
by

Great House has a wonderful mix of suspense and meditation--an intriguing narrative that explores big ideas. Centered around a big, unusual desk, the various strands of the story invite the reader to ponder which elements of our lives are ephemeral and which are permanent.

Whole New Mind Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future
by
Daniel H Pink, Daniel Pink
Stpaulgirl
, September 04, 2011
Pink makes some interesting points about the value of a well-rounded brain and skill sets that go beyond typical "left-directed" skills and branch out into creativity, empathy, and the purported domain of the right brain. He is less persuasive when he's gazing into his crystal ball and offering advice such as "Get an MFA because corporations love hiring creative people." However, the second half of the book offers interesting summaries of right-brained skills and habits that can help all of us connect with each other and find meaning in a rapidly changing world.

Let The Great World Spin
by
Colum McCann
Stpaulgirl
, January 29, 2011
Definitely the best book I read in 2010. McCann's story is a beautiful meditation on human connections and the porous boundaries between public events and our most private moments. He moves gracefully between the often bleak lives of his characters as they all bear witness in some way to Philip Petit's World Trade Center tightrope walk. The connections among the characters unfold in a way that affirms McCann's masterful grasp of both human nature and narrative.
